 Paul  (Antonio Banderas) è uno sceneggiatore che non riesce a scrivere
nulla  da quando la moglie lo ha lasciato, quattro anni prima. ?ˆ costretto a  vendere la sua vecchia casa colonica
nel bosco per sostentarsi, ma  nessuno sembra interessato a comprarla. Quando invita la sua agente  immobiliare, Laura
(Piper Perabo), a uscire insieme per un appuntamento,  mentre sta andando ad incontrarla in un piccolo ristorante del
posto,  taglia la strada a un camionista su un ripido tornante di montagna, e  per poco non uccide entrambi. Il
camionista lo segue al ristorante e  cerca la lite con lui, aggredendolo, dopo che Laura se ne sarà andata  per
incontrare un altro cliente. A salvare Paul è l'intervento di Jack  (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), un vagabondo seduto al
bancone, che ha la meglio  sul camionista e gli sussurra qualcosa all'orecchio che lo fa scappare  via per lo spavento.
Per ripagare Jack dell'aiuto, Paul lo invita a  stare a casa sua per la notte e lui accetta. I due vanno molto 
d'accordo, tanto che che Paul gli permette di restare quanto vuole, in  cambio di piccole riparazioni che devono essere
fatte in casa. Jack  sembra molto interessato alla vita di Paul e finisce per suggerigli di  scrivere una storia sulla
loro esperienza insieme. Il racconto diventa  quasi un'ossessione per Jack e quando Paul cerca di uscire di casa per 
vedere di nuovo Laura, il misterioso vagabondo si rifiuta di farlo  andare via fino a quando la storia non sarà
finita. Per assicurarsi la  collaborzione di Paul, Jack distrugge il suo cellulare, gli ruba le  chiavi dell'auto e
getta via persino tutti i suoi liquori per farlo  restare lucido mentre scrive. Il comportamento di Jack diventa sempre 
più aggressivo, ed è implicito che lui sia in realtà il serial killer  che la polizia locale sta cercando.
Quando, in maniera inaspettata,  Laura va da Paul per vedere come sta, Jack prende in ostaggio anche  lei...
